EU and Ukraine work together on science and technology

The EU has worked together with Ukrainian partners to promote research, development and training in science, technology and innovation (STI). An EU-funded initiative provided high-quality information on STI cooperation and strengthened and increased capacities in joint research projects.

The aim of the BILAT-UKR*AINA (Enhancing the bilateral S&T partnership with Ukraine * advanced innovative approach) was to enhance EU-Ukraine cooperation in STI. The project provided tailor-made analytical reports and documents for evidence-based policymaking. In particular, BILAT-UKR*AINA supported dialogue on science and technology (S&T) policy between the European Commission, EU Member States and Ukraine. This was achieved by providing analytical input (in frame of policy briefs) for the Joint S&T Cooperation Committee (JSTCC), which was monitored for practical follow-up and sustainability. Through its diverse activities, BILAT-UKR*AINA monitored and analysed the STI cooperation between EU and Ukraine; transferred best practice concepts and know-how on funding programmes, technology transfer and innovation support measures. Furthermore, the project supported Ukrainian participation in FP7/HORIZON 2020 and the establishment of the Ukrainian NCP network and training of NCPs. Also training for researchers was provided including, targeted events webinars, in-house trainings, workshops, a summer school and HORIZON 2020 promotion events. BILAT-UKR*AINA facilitated implementation of the joint EU-Ukraine STI Roadmap through pilot activities such as the establishment of the Ukrainian National Technology Platform for Advanced Materials – UNTPAM. It also identified mutual research topics in the fields of Nanotechnologies and Biotechnologies to further support the road-mapping process between EU and Ukraine. Project activities reached relevant policy-level institutions, funding bodies, NCPs, researchers, research managers/institutions, research-oriented SMEs and industry, other relevant EU projects and the public at large. The activities were implemented by a project consortium consisting of nine renowned institutions from EU Member States and Ukraine coordinated by the Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI). All project outputs as well as other project related information are publicly accessible here.
