Enhanced research capacity puts Azerbaijan on European research map

Azerbaijan is seeking to strengthen its collaboration with research centres in the European Research Area (ERA). An EU initiative helped the country's main state research organisation to develop strategic research partnerships for integration into the ERA.

The Institute of Physics, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (IPA) plays a leading role in performing research, developing new technologies and methodologies, and training highly qualified experts in the Republic of Azerbaijan and the wider region. With EU funding, the PRIMA-ERA (Promoting and improving Azerbaijan research collaboration with European Research Area) project supported several key efforts aimed at reinforcing cooperation between IPA and research centres in EU Member States and Associated Countries. PRIMA-ERA organised three open-days to boost IPA visibility, a first for such events at Azerbaijani research institutes. The public had an opportunity to become informed about the activities of the IPA and its personnel. Project partners assessed the competence of existing research activities and strategy, and analysed the short-term socioeconomic needs of the IPA. This led to a report on short- and long-term reforms in an effort to better integrate the IPA into the ERA. It targeted government bodies and research-related non-governmental organisations. The outcomes of joint experiments were published in two international journals. Twinning activities and research and training actions were carried out with the IPA and three participating institutes to facilitate knowledge exchange. A training seminar for Azerbaijani researchers was organised to raise awareness of and boost participation in future Horizon 2020 (H2020) calls concerning energy and nanotechnologies. They were also trained in writing effective proposals and building successful collaborations for H2020 initiatives. PRIMA-ERA promoted innovation in research and developed targeted research strategies to increase the scope of the IPA within and beyond Azerbaijan. It will enhance the IPA's position in the global research community as a centre for scientific and research excellence as well as know-how.
