EU and South Africa cooperate on innovation programmes

An EU initiative enhanced cooperation between the EU and South Africa by supporting the latter's participation in Horizon 2020 and reciprocal EU participation in South African research programmes. New joint science and technology initiatives were also initiated.

The EU and South Africa have a long history of cooperation, be it in trade or research and innovation. Horizon 2020, the biggest EU research and innovation funding programme ever, presents an ideal opportunity for further EU-South Africa cooperation. Co-funded by the EU, the ESASTAP PLUS(opens in new window) (Strengthening technology, research and innovation cooperation between Europe and South Africa) project built upon previous projects aimed at facilitating EU-South Africa partnerships in research and innovation, particularly by promoting Horizon 2020. ESASTAP PLUS included a consortium of European countries (France, Germany, Greece, Italy and Switzerland) with the aim of coordinating Member States' and Associated Countries' research policies and programmes vis-à-vis South Africa. It also sought to encourage the development of new joint initiatives implemented by several countries. The project helped create a National Contact Point (NCP) network in South Africa, fostering exchange amongst researchers. Currently, a Horizon 2020 NCP network is already set up and fully operational. A main challenge was to identify the most suitable channels to reach out to the South African research community and make sure the country's researchers can effectively and successfully cooperate with their European counterparts. To retain and encourage South African participation in European framework programmes, numerous events were planned, targeted especially at young scientists informing them on how to participate in EU projects. The project focused on coordinating EU cooperation with South Africa through the bilateral cooperation of EU Member States, identifying priority areas for mutually beneficial cooperation, and encouraging the development of joint initiatives. A report listing ongoing bilateral programmes, and a roadmap for coordinated action of Member States and Associated Countries in science and technology with South Africa was produced. Through social media, the Internet and promotional material, ESASTAP PLUS also raised awareness about funding opportunities for both EU and South African researchers. By investing in innovation cooperation and promoting participation in Horizon 2020, ESASTAP PLUS contributes to South Africa's knowledge creation and will stimulate interest among young scientists.
