François-Xavier de Donnea, the Minister-president of the government of the Brussels capital region who will take up the position of head of the European Union's Research council during the Belgian presidency, claimed on 18 June that the forthcoming presidency's would like to bring a resolution to the negotiations over the future of European research. 'The Belgian presidency wants to bring a decisive contribution to the creation of a European research area (ERA),' said Mr de Donnea, saying that efforts would also be made to bring a conclusion agreement on the Sixth Framework programme. He also emphasised that success in European research is bound up in its global presence and this will be one of the key themes when the Belgian presidency conference takes place on 17 and 18 September.
