A more effective network of Science in Society

National Contact Points (NCPs) supporting the EU's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) theme 'Science in Society' (SiS) have to act across wide-ranging policy and topic areas, as well as rules and regulations. An EU-funded initiative worked to strengthen the SiS NCP network and improve its operations.

The project SIS.NET(opens in new window) (Network of Science in Society National Contact Points) built on the work of the EUROSIS and EuroSiS 2.0 projects to deliver more effective and better quality services. The network targets organisations in the EU, Associated Countries and International Cooperation Partner Countries (ICPC). Partners dedicated their efforts to enhancing the sharing of best practices and knowledge transfer, with the general goal of continuing networking activities and facilitating cooperation with stakeholders. The project succeeded in mobilising the network as a support mechanism for all SiS NCPs. Other activities and gatherings, such as brokerage events and a European Parliament meeting, targeted external mobilisation for SiS stakeholders, encouraging their interaction and reinforcing their capacities for participation in the SiS programme. Different actors were thus able to discuss important issues, including policy development in Horizon 2020, with relevant stakeholders and policymakers. Results in this focus area exceeded initial expectations. To support mutual learning and capacity building, training, network meetings and a mailing list were set up to facilitate the exchange of best practices. The approach also targeted better communication of FP7 SiS objectives and issues regarding Horizon 2020. SIS.NET realised its vision of improved and more consistent NCP service across Europe, simplified and easier access to SiS calls, lowered entry barriers for newcomers and the submission of higher-quality proposals. Effectively instating SIS.NET as the SiS NCP network, the project contributed to more successful promotion of the FP7 SiS programme. This Coordination and Support Action (CSA) thus reached a wider audience and highlighted the importance of responsible research and innovation in SiS-related actions. Project work established SIS.NET as an active working tool and environment for SiS NCPs, the effects of which should carry over into Horizon 2020.
