Spanish environmental early warning systems: Cohesion Fund
The Commission has granted assistance from the cohesion financial instrument (the Cohesion Fund) to a project in Spain for the design, construction and installation of a network of early-warning stations to transmit water quality information via satellite to the Spanish water authority. The aim of the project is to put into service a network of 14 such stations for the real-time transmission to the Direccion General de Calidad de las Aguas, using VSAT, of monitored parameters including pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, total organic carbon, ammonia, total chromium, lead and cadmium. Principal objectives include: The continuous monitoring of water quality on river sections, according to the uses made of each section; statistics, graphical representations, drafting of reports on water quality; control strategies, surveillance and action against pollutant discharges (river policing); simplification of procedures, computerization, authorization of discharges and action against offenders; drafting of reports in accordance with Community Directives. The maximum amount contributed from the cohesion financial instrument shall be ECU 32,166,550.
