Telematics applications for language engineering
The Community's specific programme on Linguistic Research and Engineering (LRE) will extend the field of research covered by the Third Framework Programme by emphasizing the integration of language technologies into concrete applications. The LRE programme will apply language technologies in such areas as administration, health and training. It will continuously improve evaluation techniques and build upon other Community actions in generic RTD. In addition, it will be conducted in coordination with linguistic research actions in the Member States and with EUREKA. The LRE programme has produced a draft working document summarizing the outcome of extensive consultations with the representatives of European enterprises, research centres and user organizations. Entitled "Telematics for language engineering -Requirements and options ", it sets out the following main research topics and tasks to be addressed in 1994-98: - Areas and nature of the work programme; - Pilot applications; - Document creation and management; - Information and communication services; - Translation and foreign language acquisition; - Re-usable language resources; - Language engineering research; - Standards and assessment.
