A very successful conference on library networking took place in Brussels on 12-13 October 1994. The conference presented the first results of ongoing projects and presented the theme of the Community's LIBRARIES programme under the Fourth Framework Programme. Key issues in library networking were discussed, including electronic publications, the accessibility and delivery of electronic library services and international cooperation. The conference was attended by 440 professionals from libraries and information services in 30 European countries, including a significant participation from Eastern Europe. Among the 55 speakers attending were representatives of the European Commission and UNESCO, the British Library, Die Deutsche Bibliothek and the Bibliotheque Nationale de France as well as a wide range of key experts in the various fields of electronic publishing, electronic document delivery, new management techniques, telematics standards, exchange of bibliographic data, multimedia and extension of end-user services. The LIBRARIES programme under the Fourth Framework Programme of research and technological development (1994-1998) will start later this year and aims at preparing libraries for networked access, stimulating the use of network-based systems between libraries and integrating library services into all aspects of the information society. The conference was organized by the European Foundation for Library Cooperation (EFLC), in collaboration with the European Commission.
