On a proposal from the Commissioner responsible for regional policies and cohesion, Monika Wulf-Mathies, the Commission has approved an operational programme under INTERREG II for the Ems-Dollard region (Germany and The Netherlands). Under this programme, Structural Fund resources of approximately ECU 22.47 million will go to the districts of Aurich, Emsland and Leer on the border between Germany and The Netherlands, to the city of Emden and to the regions of Oost Groningen and Zuidoost Drenthe. The total eligible volume of the programme comes to ECU 62.7 million, with public expenditure amounting to ECU 55.3 million. The programme includes, among other things, plans to improve infrastructure (ECU 7.9 million), to promote tourism (ECU 6.4 million) and to support economic development (ECU 3.3 million). In view of the substantial growth potential which the Ems-Dollard region offers in the field of tourism, this sector will receive particular attention. This will include, for example, establishing walking and cycling paths and extending the range of tourism products.
