A sustainable alternative to soy-based aquafeeds

The AquaPekilo project aims to market a sustainable, cost-effective aquaculture feed protein made from fungi.

A growing aquaculture sector means more fish to feed. Doing so sustainably requires finding alternatives to soy and marine ingredients such as fishmeal and fish oil currently used in aquafeeds, linked, in some cases, to deforestation and overfishing respectively. AquaPekilo proposes a cost-effective, locally produced and sustainable aquaculture feed ingredient rich in protein made from fungi. Working with the aquafeed and biorefining industries, the project conducted trials demonstrating the benefits of this innovative protein ingredient – an important first step to scaling up production and bringing a more sustainable aquafeed to market.
