The European Commission, DG III, has published a call for proposals for the specific RTD programme in the field of information technologies (ESPRIT). Under this call, the sixth to be published under the ESPRIT programme, organizations eligible to participate in the programme are invited to submit proposals in the following areas:

- 1. Software technologies (ST):
. R&D projects under Theme 3: Distributed systems and database technology (only task 1.34);
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities under Activity 1: Software best practice (only tasks 1.28 1.29 and 1.31); and Activity 2: Technology transfer (only task 1.32);

- 2. Technologies for components and subsystems (TCS):
. R&D projects under Theme 1: Semiconductor components and subsystems (all tasks);
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities under Activity 1: Best practice, cooperative R&D and technology assessment (all tasks);

- 3. Multimedia systems (MS):
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities under Activity 2: Multimedia support networks (task 3.12);

- 4. Long term research (LTR):
. R&D projects under Theme 2: Reactiveness to industrial needs (task 4.2);

- 5. Open microprocessor systems initiative (OMI) (focused cluster):
. R&D projects under Theme 1: Systems technology (only tasks 5.1 5.3 5.4 5.7 5.8 5.14 and 5.15 are being called), and Theme 2: Systems integration and applications (task 5.9);

- 6. High performance computing and networking (HPCN) (focused cluster):
. R&D projects under Theme 2: Embedded systems (all tasks), and Theme 5: Development and execution environments (all tasks);

- 7. Technologies for business processes (TBP) (focused cluster):
. R&D projects under Theme 1: Business best practice pilots (only task 7.10);

Proposals are also invited, under the continuous submission scheme, for the following:

- 0. Activities applicable to all areas of the work programme:
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities (tasks 0.1 to 0.8);

- 1. Software technologies (ST):
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities under Activity 2: Technology transfer (only task 1.33);

- 2. Technologies for components and subsystems (TCS):
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities under Activity 2: First user actions - FUSE (task 2.26);

- 4. Long term research (LTR):
. R&D projects under Theme 1: Openness to ideas (task 4.1);

- 5. Open microprocessor systems initiative (OMI) (focused cluster):
. Small demonstrator projects for SMEs (task 5.16);

- 6. High performance computing and networking (HPCN) (focused cluster):
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities under Activity 1: Preparatory and first user actions (all tasks), Activity 2: Demonstration and best practice actions (all tasks), and Activity 3: Technology transfer nodes (task 6.25);

- 8. Integration in manufacturing (IiM) (focused cluster):
. Preparatory, support and transfer activities under Activity 1: Best practice in IT-based engineering and manufacturing (task 8.20).

Detailed information about procedures, eligibility, submission of proposals, the contract established with successful proposers, the newly updated work programme, and background material is given in the ESPRIT information package (recently updated in February 1996) which can be obtained from the Commission. The information package contains an information request form through which specific documentation, if needed, may be obtained.

All proposals in domains 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 8 will be evaluated in one step. The full proposal as described in the information package should be submitted to the Commission. Proposals in domains 4 and 6 will be evaluated in two stages, with the Commission inviting more detailed submissions from those successful in the first stage.
