Research and rural regions
The European Commission, DG XII, has published a book entitled "Research and rural regions - The contribution made by research and technological development in the rural and island regions". The book outlines the contribution which research and development can make in rural regions, particularly those regions cut off from the rest of Europe or the "less-favoured" regions of the European Union. RTD may provide help in the agricultural and fisheries sectors, or it may provide help in establishing new ways of creating wealth, particularly through new technologies. The book is the result of a study carried out for the Commission in 1994 by the Dynmed network with the aim of coordinating RTD policy and regional policy. The study describes over 50 local development experiments in which RTD played a major part in rural or island areas in Spain, Portugal, Greece, France, Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Denmark.
