ECU 73.64 million for the reconversion of steel areas in Spain
The European Commission has approved an aid package of ECU 73.64 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the economic reconversion of steel areas in Spain. The aid comes under the RESIDER Community initiative and will run until end-1999. The aid programme will focus on the following measures: - Environmental improvement of areas seriously damaged by steel production; - Renovation and modernization of social and economic infrastructure in steel areas; - Promotion of alternative economic activities (including tourism), in particular the creation or development of SMEs. The regions to benefit are Asturias, Cantabria, Comunidad Valenciana, Galicia, Navarra and Pais Vasco.
