In support of its initiative for improving the awareness of industry with respect to the fundamental role of innovation for sustaining and reinforcing the Union's competitive edge, the European Commission, DG III, has published an invitation to tender for the production of a European guide to industrial innovation.

The aim is to provide firms with a tool which will help them to both evaluate their innovative performance and provide them with a practical reference guide to the most suitable national infrastructures and sources of support to help them reinforce their competitiveness through innovation. The service provider will be responsible for designing the guide, which is to offer its readers:

- A self-assessment technique, with a software support package, enabling them to carry out a critical examination of the companies' main weaknesses or unexploited potential;
- Useful information and contacts in relation to policies, instruments and infrastructures available at national and Community level.
