The European Commission has awarded a total of ECU 251 million from the Structural Funds to improve the competitiveness of Spanish SMEs and to promote their adaptation to the Single Market. This funding, awarded under the SME Community Initiative, will be added to national government funding and private sector money to support a programme which will last until the end of 1999. The programme will include the setting up of aid schemes, the provision of services to SMEs and the creation or further development of risk capital funds. Its aim is to support cooperation between SMEs and improve their access to information systems, databases and innovation networks. It also hopes to encourage investment and improve product quality.
