Commission supports industrial restructuring in Luxembourg
The European Commission is to award ECU 9.84 million from the Community's Structural Funds to the region of Esch-sur-Alzette and Capellen in Luxembourg. The money will come under the Objective 2 priority of the Funds, which aims to assist the regeneration of declining industrial areas. The region concerned is the steel-making centre of Luxembourg where the unemployment rate is particularly high (accounting for over one-third of the unemployed in Luxembourg). The programme which has been agreed will represent a total investment, with contributions from the Luxembourg government and the private sector, of ECU 45.3 million. The five priority actions are: - Innovation in companies, particularly to support research and development; - Stimulation of development and diversification of economic activities through investment aid; - Protection and improvement of the environment, with decontamination of industrial wasteground; - Support for job security and employment creation through professional training activities; - Technical assistance measures.
