Hybrid MPEG-2 encoders
MPEG is the famous four-letter word for an international standard developed by the Moving Pictures Experts Groups, the committee that also developed the Emmy Award winning standard, known as MPEG-2 that made interactive video on CD-ROM, DVD and Digital Television possible. Due to its worldwide applications, there is an ever-increasing need for new and improved tools that will boost this technology in the computer world. Within an EC funded project, VITEC Multimedia developed a new family of MPEG encoders, namely the VM2-1 and VM2-2, awarded in 2001 as one of the best innovative European products. Based on hybrid technology, the innovative VM2 encoders combine the computer's processor and their own coprocessor and software capabilities for achieving robust performance of the PC's processing power. Hence, the system provides more powerful and higher compression ratios and offers the advantage of increased scalability of the video compression. In addition, the adopted hybrid approach minimises the silicon use and results to the production of highly cost effective systems. The VM2 encoders are easily and economically upgradeable offering its users with increased flexibility. All the features of the advanced technology make them suitable tools particularly for system integrators, value added retailers and embedded systems. The MPEG encoders are already in the worldwide market and VITEC Multimedia is looking for agreements with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for enhanced product solutions.
