Coupling global research across the globe

Standardising software for earth modelling systems has provided an enormous contribution towards cooperative scientific progress. Such software has been the focus of an EC-funded project.

The technicalities behind the PRISM software that provides a unique platform for European scientists and research universities to collaborate on are based on its coupling software. The OASIS3 coupler software allows for synchronised exchanges of information in order to facilitate a European - and global - exchange of data that is accessible to all scientists. This versatile software is made accessible to any scientific institution or individual and provides the means for them to provide feedback. There exists the intention of making future versions of the OASIS3 software adaptable to user modification thus making it far more customisable. The intention and value of the OASIS3 project was to ensure that global climatic conditions and changes could be communicated to scientists across the globe. It consists of several modelling components, each replicating the sub-systems of the earth's climate. The OASIS3 is therefore, fully functional and tested software that requires usable knowledge in Fortran 77 and Fortran 90 routines. Two advantages of the OASIS3 package are that is firstly a diagnostic tool based on standardised coding conventions, that it facilitates the cross-institutional, European wide simulations climatic simulations. Currently the developers seek more users to assist with further development in which they will integrate their feedback and publish the software under different configurations and platforms.
