A SYMPHONY methodology for orchestrating SMEs

A newly developed management methodology with modular and integrated methods and tools offers SMEs increased potentialities to innovate and improve within the dynamic business world.

Focusing on a special group of companies, the SYMPHONY project developed an integrated set of methods and tools for further development, modernisation and enhancement of their management capacities. These companies could be SMEs, modular units of bigger organisations or start-up companies that need to win the competitive advantage within the business arena. Towards this goal, the SYMPHONY project designed the SYMPlant, a comprehensive methodology for supporting an easy, timely and cost-efficient implementation of methods and tools in these companies. Based on the project principles, the SYMPlant methodology addresses needs of entrepreneurs and managers of the target companies, particularly networked and knowledge based SMEs. More specifically, the SYMPlant involves training modules, consulting tools and methods, as well as a self-assessment tool. The training module is a tool box with user guides, workshops and presentations that have been carefully designed for specific user needs in terms of content and didactics. Aided by this tool, consultants or companies themselves are supported throughout the entire implementation process of project's methods. The self-assessment tool provides managers with new capabilities for understanding the basic approach, specifying key issues and initiating a process that reflects the current situation within the company. The SYMPlant also covers other project products including SYMStrategy, SYMCockpit and SYMResources. Further collaborations are sought with consultants, training organisations, chamber of commerce and other intermediate organisations/associations for the development of training modules and the SYMPlant methodology.
