Planning solutions for waste management systems

A Waste Management Planning and Optimisation Handbook for municipal waste prognosis and sustainability assessment of waste management systems has been developed. The results have been concentrated from previous work packages.

Practical tools have been developed to support the planning of new and the optimisation of existing waste management systems in European cities. Two tools that were developed were the waste prognostic tool and the waste management assessment and optimization tool. Finally a user guide for the tools was also developed. The user guide consists of a description of the scientific backgrounds of the tools. These include waste generation prognosis and environmental, economic and social sustainability assessment for waste management systems. There was also a description of the developed quantified modules used for the calculation of the sustainability assessment. Some of these include treatment, first users' experiences and good practice guidelines in waste management planning. The Handbook has been translated into Slovak, Lithuanian, Polish, Greek and Spanish which are the languages of the municipalities involved in the project. The Handbooks in print form as well as the developed tools and electronic versions are available free of charge for municipalities across Europe. These can be downloaded from the project web site www.lca-iwm.net.
