Composition language for web services
Web services have a major impact on companies, businesses, organisations and public administrations as the size and penetration in all areas of daily life is tremendous. It is of prime importance that the Basic Services (BSs) offered by individual organisations feature availability, scalability and adaptability. Moreover, composing multiple BSs into Composite Services (CSs) may result into new business opportunities for more added-value services. Challenged by this the ADAPT project produced new technology and software infrastructure for specification, representation and monitoring of inter-organisational business processes. These would be exploited as composite services for increasing availability, scalability and adaptability to the changing network conditions and user demands. Furthermore, these services are expected to be easily reconfigured and repaired under specific conditions. Composition languages constitute a valuable tool for the investigation of web services structure and interrelationship. Most of the currently available languages are based on a centralised view of composition, for instance usage of shared variables considerably hinders execution in a distributed manner. Moreover, they may control flow mechanisms in a complicated way, which is an obstacle for the easy analysis of services. Answering this need the ADAPT project created a new composition language on the grounds on a distributed composition and a simple data flow sequencing model. This novelty is offered to both industrial and academic partners as well as to those interested in investigating possible extensions of this in virtual organisations.
