Unlocking Life Sciences' business potential

Scientists wishing to swap the laboratory for the boardroom received valuable advice from an EU-funded project that provided them with the necessary skills and tools for establishing their own biotech business.

The ''Bio entrepreneur boot camp: starting life science companies' (Biobootcamp) project was a three-day workshop that taught life science researchers how to commercialise their ideas. Biobootcamp provided a solid foundation for new business ventures by explaining how to get started and what pitfalls to avoid with advice from leading bioentrepreneurs. Biobootcamp goals included explaining business plans and the needs of financial partners, sharing experience of business planning and training in Biobootcamp software. Following the workshop, participants were able to generate their own business plans to guage the financial viability of a new venture. They also learnt how to write an effective executive summary that would lead them to potential investors. The project’s success allowed scientists to receive the necessary knowledge for the creation of life science-based companies. This will help to establish Europe as a centre for biotechnology and boost the economy and skills base of the European Union by establishing biotechnology-based businesses.
