Catalysts that clean
As the world economy falters, the race to improve energy efficiency and fuel production is on, with environmental considerations high on the agenda. One important initiative in this respect involves research in metal-oxide catalysts, which are key for reducing emissions and for producing clean hydrogen. The EU-funded project 'Coordination of nanostructured catalytic oxides research and development in Europe' (Concorde) enhanced research and development in the field through strong networking and high-level exchanges. Concorde aimed to considerably minimise duplication of research on the topic and enhance synergy of stakeholders, building institutional relationships through personnel exchanges, scientific meetings and mutual training. Indeed, the project helped enable consortia to cooperate on several levels and innovate on research related to metal oxides, encouraging direct knowledge transfer from laboratories to practical applications. The project team assessed progress in the field and outlined future requirements with respect to metal-oxide catalysts. It outlined the needs of society and industry in order to provide policymakers with knowledge and recommendations to further these aims. The Concorde initiative helped produce more knowledge on preparation methodologies, including identification and development of new metal-oxide catalysts. It also investigated the chemistry of metal oxides to improve catalytic reactions and unveil novel applications for their use. Through a number of scientific workshops and conferences, including over 70 training sessions, meetings and networking activities, Concorde disseminated the latest information on metal oxide developments and furthered research considerably. The knowledge will certainly enrich the ERA and will promote innovation in the petrochemical and environment sectors.
