Almost every nation in the EU is looking to strengthen cutting-edge science and research such as related to nanotechnology and multifunctional materials. The EU-funded project 'Hungarian network of excellent centers on nanosciences' (HUNN) has mobilised human and material resources in Hungary to further these fields under a virtual national nanocentre. It aimed to link to similar centres across Europe, particularly with new and upcoming EU states. The project developed novel research and innovation strategies, supported regional technology transfer, increased Hungarian participation in EU research programmes and disseminated relevant scientific information. It paved the way to establish the nanotechnology platform, initiated mobility schemes and supported joint projects in nanotechnology and nanoscience fields. Specific topics also covered new production processes and devices, particularly with respect to knowledge-based multifunctional materials. HUNN was able to further Hungarian innovation and research policy with focus on mainstream research topics. Strong support was also given to student education, including preparing a textbook on nanosciences and elaborating databases on current educational and training resources at Hungarian institutions. Moreover, the project successfully increased participation of Hungarian stakeholders in EU project proposals with several successful outcomes. It conducted technology transfer days, scientific presentations, roundtable discussions, workshops, seminars and poster sessions to advance the aims of the nanocentre in several ways. These initiatives have positioned Hungary as an emerging authority on nanosciences region-wide, integrating the country more fully into the European Research Area (ERA) and setting precedents for other young EU countries.
