The European Commission has put forward a proposal for a European Parliament and Council Directive on connected telecommunications equipment (CTE) and the mutual recognition of the conformity of equipment. The aim of the proposed Directive is to establish a Community regulatory framework for the placing on the market, free circulation and putting into service of connected telecommunications equipment which complies with a number of specified essential requirements. The Commission shall be assisted, in its supervision of the implementation of this Directive, by a committee - the Telecommunications Conformity Assessment and Market Surveillance Committee (TCAM). Member States would be required to take the measures necessary to comply with this Directive no later than 1 July 1999.
