Recent scandals have shown how global food supply chains are increasingly complex and interlinked across borders. They contain a severe warning, that food safety is an area that cannot be taken for granted. Food safety needs joint efforts within the EU and beyond. An EU-funded research project, FOODSEG, is collating the considerable amount of work done in the field of foodsafety by European researchers. The FOODSEG-Experts are also developing EU-wide strategies and recommendations for food handling and other related areas such as consumer, research, health and agriculture policies. The project, which started in 2011 and lasts until 2014, brings together experts working on food safety through a series of meetings, events and a new online platform and promotes the results of their work to as wide an audience as possible The initiative is forging stronger links within the food safety research community and facilitates the integration of experts from NMS and ACC, to create a broader network and encourage deeper collaboration. Working to promote a subject of vital importance to every EU consumer, FOODSEG will help to ensure the safety of the food that ends up on their plates.
