Coupling hydrology and meteorology for flood forecasting
The experience and future plans of the Mesoscale Alpine programme, which aims to improve understanding of atmospheric and hydrological processes in mountain areas, will be presented during the seminar. The idea of coupling hydrology and meteorology may prove important for flood forecasting, and the programme to be presented aims to demonstrate the forecast capabilities of hydrological flood models.
The programme, conducted through a series of monitoring systems in four target areas, will assess the importance of having access to information on elements such as reservoir volumes and operation rules in the context of flood models. In addition, field measurements of soil moisture are planned, possibly in connection with airborne microwave remote sensing, to assess the role of soil moisture prior to floods in determining the production of runoff.
