The spring conference hosted by the University of Hamburg aims to widen the crucial debate on funding launched at EUA’s Convention of European Higher Education Institutions (Glasgow, March 2005) and developed at the recent conference "Research in European Universities: Strategies and Funding" (Uppsala, Sweden, Oct 2005).
At a time of stagnating public funding universities increasingly need to diversify their funding sources and find new revenues, such as through private investment or fundraising. The conference in Hamburg will examine the different types of funding available and their impact on institutions. Discussions will address in particular the issue of tuition fees and student support and the potential of private public funding partnerships.
In tandem with determining new funding streams, universities also need to develop internal processes to ensure these funds are managed effectively and transparently. Therefore, the conference will also look at issues of governance connected to the management of increasingly diverse funding sources.

• André Sapir, Professor of Economics, Université Libre de Bruxelles, European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics, Belgium; Chairman of the High-Level Study Group 2002-2003 author of the report “An Agenda for a Growing Europe”, July 2003.
• Claude Allègre, Member of the French Science Academy, Former Minister for Education, Research and Technology, France and Founding father of the Bologna process.
