Earth observation partnerships with Africa: Presentation of FP6 project results

At a special event on Monday 11 June 2007 the results of a Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) project, EO-LANDEG (http://www.eolandeg.com(öffnet in neuem Fenster)) will be presented. This project focuses on Earth observation cooperation between Europe and Africa to fight land degradation and support integrated water management.

11 Juni 2007 - 11 Juni 2007
South Africa
The EO-LANDEG results will be presented by the project consortium consisting of the South African Council for Geoscience (http://www.geoscience.org.za(öffnet in neuem Fenster)) the French Office for Geological and Mining Research – BRGM (http://www.brgm.fr(öffnet in neuem Fenster)) and a South African SME specializing in geospatial and remote sensing services – GRS.

The project assesses and analyzes Earth observation tools and data sets, which can be deployed to support environmental conservation and poverty alleviation. Earth observation is indeed a primary instrument to achieve global sustainable development, as for example evidenced by work of international initiatives such as the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). EO-LANDEG has a truly multi-disciplinarian focus, spanning the natural sciences – e.g. geology, hydrology, soil and climatology, etc. as well as social sciences – e.g. demographic studies, sustainable livelihoods, land management, etc. in attempting to optimally harness Earth observation’s role in facilitating science-based policy- and decision-making.

The best practices in Earth observation partnerships between developed and developing countries (especially in Africa) identified during the project will seek to inform new such partnerships under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Indeed, in this context EO-LANDEG also seeks to create an European-African observation networking platform for FP7 cooperation.

The EO-LANDEG consortium is inviting interested parties to the presentation of the project results and for discussions on possible future cooperation under FP7. The presentation will be held on Monday 11 June 2007 at 11:00 at the South African Mission to the European Union in Brussels (Rue Montoyer 17-19, 1000 Brussels – Metro: Trone.) The presentation will be followed at 13:00 by a networking lunch.

Interested parties should kindly confirm their participation with Ms Francoise Dassy at: francoise.dassy@belgacom.net .
