Background:
Construction is a large and strategically important industry employing around 26 million workers in 15 countries are employed in the construction sector with 2.5 million firms involved - 97% of them are small and medium-sized enterprises.

Construction is also a very fragmented industry sector reflected in the way that construction projects are made up, with many players from different disciplines contributing to a project. This makes good communication essential, and the best form of communication is through information sharing on projects, using open standards and tools such as the building information model (BIM).

Today, the construction industry is standing at a crossroads where the way forward represents a challenging paradigm shift. There are easier ways to go - business as usual, producing high-consumption buildings in an industry that itself works in wasteful ways. Or we could go forward and "wake a sleeping giant".
