The role of local energy and environment policies will be considered in an integrated approach to urban management at the next annual seminar of Energie-Cités. The seminar, "Cities for Citizens: What should be local energy and environment policies?", will be held in Brussels on 22 and 23 April 1999.

The conference is aimed at local authorities, urban stakeholders, municipal companies, local energy agencies and local development agencies

It is being jointly organised by the City and Region of Brussels and the Brussels Institute for Environmental Management. It will give particular attention to air and environmental quality issues and will give practical examples of overall approaches to city management. It will also aim to demonstrate the role of local energy policy in promoting sustainable urban development, allow debates and discussions between political and technical decision makers, and prepare proposals for action based on practical experience.

Eight working groups will also investigate how local environmental and energy policy can promote practical action on the following themes:

- Air quality and transport;
- Urban energy planning;
- Education;
- The gender dimension;
- Air quality and climate change;
- Waste and natural resources;
- New technology
- Social exclusion.

The conference is being organised with support from the European Commission, Directorate Generals XI and XII.
