A new guide establishes the best practices in design for an optimized production of lens

The guide produced by Ascamm Foundation defines essential designing rules for an optimized manufacturing process of small lens

8 Aprile 2010
Spain
A new guide for design of micro and mini lens is expected to be a useful tool when adapting high precision optics requirements to an optimised industrial production.
The document was developed by Ascamm Technology Centre (Barcelona, Spain) within the activities of Production4µ R&D project, a European consortium which aims to deliver a new process chain for producing micro optical systems.
The main rules that should be followed when it comes to design certain sort of optical systems are specified in the guide. By doing so, it is expected to optimize the mentioned process providing solutions to applications such as laser medical equipments, integrated photography cameras or night vision systems for vehicles.
As a result of several tests carried out by the consortium, the document deal with subjects concerning materials, mould features or designing attributes for injection processes, beside the required specifications to prevent distortions which would compromise its optical performance.

Costs prediction
In order to face all aspects involved in the industrial process, Ascamm Technology Centre has developed a model that will supply a production cost prediction taking in consideration technical requirements previously selected by the designer. The most critical costs are related to labour, material, mould design and infrastructure.
“With no doubt, the innovations and technology developments are critical when it comes to ensure optimized production processes and, therefore, cheaper products”, says Benjamin Cavallini, Production4µ technical coordinator in Ascamm. “However, in order to achieve an actual competitive process, it is also necessary to optimize all aspects involved in the business”, he explains.
“This in a multidisciplinary approach seeking solutions to all needs that a company may have when producing high precision micro parts.”
Production4µ consortium is coordinated by IPT Fraunhofer (Germany) and counts with more than 20 European partners, among research organizations, technology centres and companies. Ascamm is mostly taking part in production planning activities, offering its support in the production quality management.
The activities are partially funded by the European Union under the 6th Framework Programme.
