The European project SPHERE+ will offer research results and lessons for future substitution projects at a European conference in Amsterdam on 22 and 23 April 1999.

The SPHERE+ project (Substitution Projects for Health and Environment) is a research programme funded by the European Commission to highlight preconditions for a successful substitution strategy with a focus on methodological, organisational, social and economic aspects of the innovation process.

Seven substitution projects in 11 different countries have been compared and analysed. After 18 months of research, the SPHERE+ project is making the results public with the first copies of a CD-ROM to be handed out at the conference.

Among the topics of the conference (and of the CD-ROM) are:

- Government initiatives;
- Building up alliances;
- Capacity building and campaigning;
- Transnational experiences;
- Roles of trade unions, employers' organisations, non-governmental organisations and industry.
