Seminar stresses the importance of standards and reliable measures
The event is linked to the European Commission's Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) for Research, Technological development and Demonstration, because the generic activity "measurements and testing" falls under the thematic programme "Competitive and Sustainable Growth". This will be a basic financial source for enterprises and research centres in general that focus on the following objectives:
- Support to standardization;
- Anti-fraud;
- Support to the quality of measurements to underpin the quality of products and services.
Without standards, reliable measurement and testing techniques, and quality control procedures, the world would be a much more uncertain place: food would not be safe to eat, communication would hardly be possible, and the quality and safety of industrial products and processes would not be guaranteed, according to the organizer.
Europe's needs for measurement-related research have evolved. With the drive to improve quality of life and increase Europe's competitiveness in global markets, standardization bodies require research for written standards to support activities across industry. New measurement methods and instruments are also constantly in demand so that the quality of new products and services can be tested.
The concept of Total Quality is increasingly important to the success of European industry. Laboratories must be able to show they are producing meaningful results and consequently, accreditation is crucial.
This seminar, organized by Aido Asociacion Industrial de Optica, on behalf of the European Commission, is intended to provide:
- Access to information about the available possibilities from FP5 through participation in the Measurement and Testing Programme;
- Knowledge of how to put together a proposal for financing under FP5;
- Contact with EC representatives for advice on negotiating the proposal procedure;
- Knowledge of earlier results from projects on Standards, Measures and Testing within the EC's Fourth Framework Program;
- Contact with different enterprises, institutions, and research centres to encourage future collaborations
