The fifth conference on Current Research Information Systems in Europe, CRIS 2000, will be held in Helsinki, Finland, on 25 to 27 May 2000, under the theme 'knowledge at work - research information for society'.

The conference will address the challenges of making current research widely available utilising the new technologies of the Information Society.

With the emergence of the Web, CRIS have evolved from research documentation units at publicly funded universities into dynamic, interactive information resources and important means for technology transfer and cooperation between research institutions.

Organised by the European Commission within the framework of its innovation and SMEs programme, the event will be hosted by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Tekes, the Technology Development Centre in Finland.

Event organisers expect a large turnout this year in the wake of the popularity of the Internet and multimedia applications in addition to the increasing awareness of the importance of CRIS.

Mario Bellardinelli, Chairman of the Programme Committee and until recently Head of Unit for the dissemination of science and technological knowledge in the European Commission, said: 'The conference is a forum for sharing ideas amongst policy makers, businesses, researchers, organisations, governments and universities on how to disseminate the results of European research.

'Publicly funded research should be accessible to the citizens who paid for it, and should be exploitable by industry for the benefit of the entire society. We will be examining ways that this is done well in different areas of Europe at the moment, and how it can be done better'.

Mr Bellardinelli says there will be two main strands to the conference. The first will look at ways of getting research information to society and to industry, stimulating the usage of CRIS. The second will look at technical problems of building a CRIS and making it easily accessible.

Papers will address the CRIS product, CRIS usage, the 'public interest' in CRIS, and the future of CRIS.

Information dissemination services for research activities, such as CORDIS, will be on display. CORDIS staff will be providing a demonstration of the New Home Page that went live in January. Commission representatives will also provide their experience of how problems with developing dissemination systems such as Ergo and the Cerif standard have been addressed at European level.

There will also be a CRIS 2000 Cybercafe, providing access to Conference contributions and Conference related information, as well as a forum for the virtual CRIS Conference.

'Come and see how much we have progressed and see how valuable research information can be useful in ways you haven't imagined possible,' says Mr Bellardinelli.
