A workshop entitled 'Implementing the new regulatory framework (Directive 2001/18/EC) stakeholders' workshop' will take place in Brussels on 19 and 20 November.

The workshop aims to achieve open dialogue between all stakeholders interested in the implementation of the new Directive on the deliberate release into the environment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Directive 2001/18/EC, which repeals Directive 90/220/EEC, was formally adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on 12 March 2001. The deadline for implementation into national legislation is 17 October 2002.

Through the workshop, the Commission aims to provide a forum for stakeholders to discuss the idea of implementing the revised Directive and to gather the opinions of all the stakeholders.

The event will feature three working groups on the issues of 'implementation,' 'risks and/or benefits of GMOs,' and 'challenges for the future' in the context of the revised Directive.For further information, please consult the following web addresses:
