A conference on the role of basic research in the process of structuring the European Research Area (ERA) will be held from 16 to 18 April 2009 in Prague, Czech Republic. It is organised by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, under the auspices of the Czech Presidency of the European Union.

The formation of the ERA is a process launched by the European Union at the beginning of the decade. This vision is periodically refined through various initiatives, recommendations and/or papers, such as the 'Vision 2020 for the ERA', which was prepared at the end of 2008. It underlined the importance of the effective creation of an area of freedom and exchange for researchers. This conference will contribute to the discussion.

Target participants include European and international research stakeholders, research organisations, science foundations, European Commission representatives and other policy makers.For further information and registration, please visit:
