Conference on "Renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean basin"

A conference on "Renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean basin" will be held in Athens, Greece, on 9-11 November 1995. The conference is being jointly organized by the European Energy Foundation (EEF), the European Forum for Renewable Energy Sources (EUFORES), the Greek Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES) and EUROSOLAR. It is supported by the European Commission and will be attended by the European Commissioner responsible for energy policy, Mr. Papoutsis.

The aim of the conference is to consider the importance of the development of renewable energy sources in the Mediterranean basin within the context of the newly proposed Euro-Mediterranean Partnership which will run for five years (1995-1995) and which is aimed at strengthening European cooperation with the countries of the Mediterranean region.

The conference should result in a high-level political engagement on the part of the participating countries supporting the use of part of the resources approved for the Euro-Mediterranean partnership to significantly increase RES implementation in that area and identifying the importance of financing RES versus other priorities of this initiative. A message along these lines will be presented to the Barcelona Mediterranean Conference, the Madrid Energy Conference and to the parallel civil forum, EUROMED.
