Origins, mechanisms and effects of salts on degradation of monuments in marine and continental environments

A European Commission research workshop on the "Origins, mechanisms and effects of salts on degradation of monuments in marine and continental environments" will be held in Bari, Italy, on 25-27 March 1996. The workshop is being organized within the framework of the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of environment and climate (1994-1998).

The workshop will include the presentation and discussion of research results achieved under the EC project "Marine spray and polluted atmosphere as factors of damage to monuments in the Mediterranean and coastal environment". This will cover various aspects of research including: the analysis of weathering processes on monuments under marine influence; "in situ" research and monitoring; analytical techniques applied to conservation; and decay patterns.

The aim of the workshop is to define the state of the art in the European Union in this area, to promote mutual exchange of information and collaboration, and to identify areas for future research into monument conservation strategies.
