Quantum dissipation and applications
The subject of quantum dissipation has received a substantial boost from the physics of superconducting devices, in particular from the study of macroscopic quantum tunnelling (MQT) and coherence (MQC) of fluxoids in current biased Josephson Junctions (CBJJs) and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs).
Soon after the first experimental proofs of its success, the method which has been applied for dealing with dissipative quantum systems started to be used in very different fields, such as quantum theory of measurement, physics of macromolecules, mesoscopic devices, nuclear physics, field theoretical tunnelling and quantum diffusion.
The workshop will provide an overview of the basic knowledge in this field. The following topics will be addressed:
- Models for quantum dissipation;
- Open questions in dissipative quantum tunnelling and coherence (of particles and fields);
- Quantum diffusion;
- Decoherence in non-isolated systems;
- Applications in macroscopic quantum phenomena;
- Quantum theory of measurement and others.
The workshop is open to scholars from all countries which are members of the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or UNESCO. Participation is limited, and selection will be restricted to those with relevant research experience.
Some funds are available for a limited number of people from developing countries. In addition, some funds are available from the Commission's HCM programme for young researchers, who are residents or nationals of EEA countries.
