Advanced European training course on marine data and information management

An advanced European training course on marine data and information management will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 18-29 November 1996. It is sponsored by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of marine science and technology (MAST III, 1994-1998).

The training course will cover a wide range of subjects in the field of the marine environment, from data acquisition to final application, including such topics as:

- Marine information and data needs of researchers and policy makers;
- Data-acquisition procedures;
- Procedures and guidelines for quality control and assessment;
- Specific role and characteristics of remote sensing data;
- Role, capabilities and limitations of expert systems;
- Characteristics of geographical information systems and mapping systems;
- Current marine information programmes and systems in Europe and in the world.

In addition to standard software, such as spreadsheets and database management systems, a selection of specific software packages will be made available to the participants in order to demonstrate the operational usage of these tools in specific applications.
