Marine data and information management

An advanced European training course on Marine Data and Information Management will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 18 to 29 November 1996. The course, which is supported by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Marine Science and Technology (MAST), is being organized by Paul Geerders Consultancy, a consultancy company specialized in remote sensing of the marine environment and related management of marine data and information.

The training course will include a range of subjects covering the full process from data acquisition to final application. Topics will include, among others:

- Marine data management: the JRC experience;
- Geographic information and mapping systems;
- Expert and decision support systems for integrated coastal zone management;
- European and global marine information systems and mechanisms;
- The role of electronic networks.

In addition to standard software, such as spreadsheets, database management systems and wordprocessors, a selection of specific software packages will be made available to participants. The aim is to demonstrate the operational usage of these tools in various specific applications. Participants will, notably, be provided with a copy of the OCEAN-PC package, initiated by and developed under UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
