The fourth European conference for the Advancement of Assistive Technology in Europe (AAATE) will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 29 September to 2 October 1997. The conference is being organized by BIOTRAST, a contract research organization originally established under the Community's COMETT II programme for cooperation between universities and industry regarding training in the field of technology (1990-1994).

The AAATE conference is aimed at people working or interested in rehabilitation and assistive technology, such as physicians, nurses, computer scientists, engineers and technicians, as well as health policy makers. It will present a wide spectrum of experiences and solutions to the broad range of problems in the field of rehabilitation. Different cultural backgrounds, problem-solving traditions and resources will also be highlighted.

The topics of the conference cover all aspects of rehabilitation technology and research, including:

- Consumer involvement;
- Technology supporting assessment, restoration and enhancement of function;
- Integrated systems supporting the activities of independent living, education, work, leisure, mobility and training;
- Application of manipulation and control technology;
- Access to new information and communication technologies;
- Information and communication technology for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of service organizations supporting independent living.

A technical/commercial exhibition of new products and innovations in software and hardware will be held in parallel to the conference.
