A conference on "Socio-economic research and geographic information systems (GIS)" will be held in Castelvecchio Pascoli, Italy, from 17 to 21 May 1997. The conference, which is supported under the Euroconferences activity of the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, is being organized by the European Science Foundation (ESF).

Recent developments in the handling of digital geographic information have created many new opportunities for socio-economic research. Geography, and urban and regional planning have been among the first fields of application but many others have now started to take advantage of these opportunities, including sociology, criminology, public health, archaeology, and business management.

The main objective of this conference is to promote interdisciplinary discussion and evaluation of the positive and negative impacts that the growing use of geographic information handling technologies have on society and social science research.

Support from the TMR programme means that grants may be available for young researchers (under 36) from the EU and associated states. These grants will cover the conference fee and possibly some travel costs. No funds are available to support the attendance of scientists from Central and Eastern European countries.
