The European Commission and European Parliament are organizing a conference on "Women and Science", in Brussels, Belgium, on 28 and 29 April 1998. Participants will discuss how women can become more involved in science and research in Europe, and what both policy-makers and the scientific community itself can do to promote the participation of women in science.

Organized on the initiative of Edith Cresson, Commissioner responsible for research, innovation, education, training and youth, the conference aims to promote equal opportunities for men and women in the research sector. Women represent a minority of those working in this sector. The conference will look at the reasons for this, as well as seeking means to redress the balance. Not only do fewer women than men enter the research world, but those that do often do not reach the heights achieved by their male counterparts and can find barriers in their way.

Two round tables will be held during the conference. One will feature a number of prominent women scientists from around Europe and from different fields. From their experiences, they will outline the important contributions which women scientists can make and discuss the reasons why women researchers face greater difficulties in their careers than their male colleagues. The second round table will bring together decision-makers, in particular government ministers responsible for research and research policy. They will discuss examples from their own Member States and recommend measures to promote equal opportunities in science. In addition to these invited speakers, participants will also be able to put forward their experiences and opinions in an open session.

The conference comes at a key point in the development of the EU's Fifth RTD Framework Programme, and a major focus of the discussions will be the promotion of equal opportunities in the new Programme. Mrs. Cresson will chair a discussion on this subject at which speakers will include Godelieve Quisthoudt-Rowohl, MEP, the Parliament's rapporteur on the Fifth Framework Programme, and Eryl McNally, MEP, a member of the Parliament's Research and Women's Rights Committees.

At the close of the conference, Commissioner Cresson is due to present an agenda for equal opportunities in the Fifth Framework Programme.
