A seminar entitled "From algal nutrient competition to zooplankton and fish: is there a bottom-up propagation of effects?" will be held in Ispra, Italy, on 27 November 1996. The seminar is part of the series of Blue Seminars organized by the Environment Institute of the Joint Research Centre.

The seminar will be conducted by Ulrich Sommer of the "Institut für Meereskunde" in Kiel, Germany. The aim of the seminar is to discuss the effects of the ratio of limiting nutrients on the taxonomic outcome of inter-specific competition between phytoplankton.

In particular, the seminar will focus on comparisons of regional food-webs. These comparisons suggest that that a dominance by diatoms would support shorter food chains than other types of phytoplankton, leading to a more efficient transfer of primary production to fish. These conclusions are, however, based only on comparative ecology, as there is not yet any experimental evidence.

The Blue Seminar series serves as an open forum for discussion on the management of water resources in Europe. The seminars will also contribute to the work of the task force on water technologies, established by the Commission.
