From local pollution to global contamination
The Blue Seminars, organized by the Environment Institute of the Community's Joint Research Centre, aim to improve understanding of aquatic processes and how they are affected by human activities, and to identify the present state and future development of water technologies needed to cope with the major threats affecting the water cycle.
This latest seminar in the series, led by Prof. Kurt Weber of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Germany), will address the impact of river runoff and long range transport on the pollution of marine ecosystems. Selected examples of both of these processes will be given in this lecture. Water pollution in the German estuaries and the impact of coastal dynamics on pollutant dispersion will be discussed, as will the transport of pollutants by ocean currents.
The Blue Seminar series serves as an open forum for discussion on the management of water resources in Europe. The seminars will also contribute to the work of the task force on water technologies, established by the Commission.
