Research programme (EEC,Euratom) to be implemented by the Joint Research Centre - Fissile materials control -, 1977-1979
The research activity of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in this direction was coordinated within similar activities carried out by other research groups in the Community in the framework of the European Safety and Reliability Research and Development Association (ESARRDA). Apart from this, direct collaboration in special fields has been established between the JRC and industrial firms.
This programme was pursuant to the previous JRC programme in this field.
To give technical support to the Commission in the execution of its safeguards obligations and to assist nuclear plant operators in the implementation of safeguards measures.
Eight projects:
- Development of a code for the evaluation of Material Unaccounted For (MUF);
- Data bank of isotopic compositions of irradiated nuclear fuels;
- Isotopic Correlation Experiment organized by ESARRDA;
- Analysis of the methodology for the high accuracy determination of the uranium enrichment of the most important materials encountered in fuel fabrication;
- Safeguards instuments for the neutron irradiation of samples to be assayed and for the prompt and delayed counting of neutrons;
- Automation of the control and data processing and retrieval systems of non-destructive assay inspection instruments;
- Transportable mass spectrometer;
New sealing technique for safeguarding nuclear materials.
The Commission, assisted by the board of governors of the JRC, was responsible for the implementation of the programme by means of the services of the JRC (Ispra).
