Opportunistic Radio Communications in unLicensed Environments

Objective

The key objective of ORACLE is to research, develop, and validate concepts, mechanisms and architectures for cognitive radio networks and terminals and to demonstrate the socio-economical advantages of opportunistic spectrum usage. By providing novel mechanisms for enhanced and more efficient spectrum usage, ORACLE supports the i2010 initiative of the European Commission towards the Information Society.

The development of agile terminals and mechanisms to facilitate access networks (i.e. the access points, base stations and/or Node Bs) that can sense holes in used spectrum and adapt their transmission characteristics to use these holes in the radio spectrum will provide one tool to optimise spectrum utilization.

To this end, ORACLE will:
- research sensing techniques to acquire relevant information from the radio environment and define the feasible operating region
- define decision making processes to allow intelligent choice of spectrum access technologies based on spectrum access policies and on available or unused spectrum
- propose optimisation procedures to define the best physical layer
- design protocols and algorithms that identify, disseminate and exploit space dimension in Opportunistic Radio networks
- propose adaptable baseband architectures and reconfiguration techniques to support all digital RF flexible transceiver architectures
- prototype a hardware platform demonstrating opportunistic terminal and network features

This will be complemented by system level studies to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques in terms of system parameters (capacity, QoS). Through its dissemination activities, the project will contribute to the global research, regulatory and standardization process.
