A FIRST STEP TOWARDS AVIATION DECARBONIZATION WITH SMART LITHIUM BATTERIES

Project description

Greener energy storage solutions for aircraft use

Reducing the environmental impact of batteries is a crucial challenge in a world with an increasing need for energy storage solutions. Current batteries contain toxic or corrosive materials that are extremely hazardous for the ecosystem. Batteries used in aviation are of the most demanding types of batteries as they ought to combine high density with safety, reliability, light weight and efficiency in a variety of environmental conditions. The EU-funded ORION project will introduce lithium batteries for cleaner yet safe energy that will revolutionise the aviation sector. ORION’s solution will be the first strategic step for the decarbonisation of aviation as it will facilitate the transition to hybrid or electrically-powered aeronautics.

Objective

With the Orion project, Limatech wishes to accelerate the market launch of its 28V lithium battery range, enabling it to address the largest aeronautic battery market, replace toxic batteries, and generate savings of 1M tons of Co2 within the next 8 years.
Limatech develops lithium batteries for cleaner yet safe energy that can revolutionize the aviation sector. Led by a female CEO, Limatech originates from the CEA (French national research laboratory) and benefits from the expertise of an experienced researcher.
At a time of commitment to fighting pollution, and the use of toxic products in particular, European directive 2006/66/EC encourages the replacement of dangerous substances in batteries (Cadmium & Lead) by less polluting products.

Lithium batteries are currently one of the most relevant responses for replacing these harmful substances. They are also 3 times lighter, last twice as long and require little maintenance.

Limatech has succeeded in meeting the challenge of securing lithium batteries for aviation, by developing protective electronics that integrate all the safety functions required with exceptional reliability and precision. Awarded the Airbus Aeronautical Innovation Award in 2019, the technology is now being demonstrated in a real environment and several patents have been filed.

The Lithium starter battery is a first strategic step, which will then help decarbonize aviation via the transition to hybrid or electrically-powered aircraft.

This innovative technology is highly anticipated by key players in the aviation industry, as it represents a real challenge for European technological sovereignty. Targeting the global market for low-voltage aeronautic batteries, estimated at 850 M€/year, Limatech has already generated significant interest from major European clients.

Through the EIC project and our unique selling points, we offer our clients a return on investment in under 1 year and contribute to their carbon reduction objectives.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
